Kira is a Boston-based playwright from North Texas. She is the 2019 recipient of the Judith Royer Award of Excellence in Playwriting. Her character driven plays seek to foster empathy, cultivate hope, and challenge complacency. She writes to redefine and sculpt the contemporary Southern narrative in an earnest attempt to combat harmful, antiquated stereotypes.

Most recently, her play The Tragic Ecstasy of Girlhood recieved a Norton nomination for Outstanding New Script, it is the second place recipient of the Kennedy Center Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, and the National Winner of The Bechdel Test Fest, as well as being shortlisted for PlayPenn and a semi-finalist for the O’Neill Center.

Other plays include, With My Eyes Shut (The Last Frontier Theatre Conference, 2018 Best in Dance & Physical Theatre at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, WaterTower Theatre’s Out of the Loop Fringe Festival), Nomad Americana (World Premiere: Fresh Ink Theatre). Her plays have been developed and or produced by the Kennedy Center, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, Boston Center for the Arts, Fresh Ink Theatre, and Third Culture Theatre in collaboration with Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network and HBO.

Kira holds a BFA in Theatre Performance from Baylor University. Before entering into her current MFA playwriting program at Boston University, she spent time working in various nonprofits across Waco, Texas at the intersection of social work, youth development, and arts education, including a three year stint working full time at a Children’s Home. Her play, With My Eyes Shut, will be published in 2019 with Original Works.
