kira rockwell (she/her) is a Boston-based playwright from North Texas. She is the 2019 recipient of the Judith Royer Excellence in Playwriting Award and this year’s Runner-Up for the Princess Grace Award in Playwriting/Fellowship with New Dramatists. Her character-driven plays seek to foster empathy, cultivate hope, and challenge complacency. She writes to redefine and sculpt the contemporary Southern narrative in an earnest attempt to combat harmful antiquated stereotypes.

Her plays include The Tragic Ecstasy of Girlhood (second place recipient of the 2019 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award from the Kennedy Center, National Winner of The Bechdel Test Fest, Elliot Norton nomination for Outstanding New Script, O’Neill Semi-Finalist); Oh, to Be Pure Again (MFA Playwrights’ Workshop with National New Play Network and the Kennedy Center, Boston Center for the Arts); With My Eyes Shut (Hollywood Fringe Festival, Last Frontier Theatre Conference, Out of the Loop Fringe Festival); and Nomad Americana (World Premiere: Fresh Ink Theatre). Her work has been supported by Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, Fresh Ink Theatre, WaterTower Theatre, and Third Culture Theatre in collaboration with Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network and HBO. Kira holds a BFA in Theatre Performance from Baylor University. Before entering into her MFA playwriting program at Boston University, she spent time in various nonprofits working at the intersection of social work, youth development, and arts education. Her acclaimed neurodivergent love story, With My Eyes Shut, is now available through Original Works Publishing.
